We got his as a reference book for our office as we have a lot of people using R for data analysis. The book is written in an extremely accessible format and I would highly recommend to anyone learning R and needing some guidance.
This book is so funny and readable! It really does simplify stats and is excellent for a PhD student like myself who has had extensive qualitative training and is less familiar with quant. The book is worth buying just to have on hand, Ive enjoyed it!
I am a relative newcomer to the world of R. Ms. Radziwill has a conversational style of writing that is both easy to follow and clear. She will write out some code and then will put the code created into plain English. Within the first few minutes of obtaining the book I was able to easily construct a bar plot graph that had previously been a problem area for me. I would definetly recommend this book to others.
The book has an admirable mission but fails to deliver largely because of amateurish production. As an example, the font used to show code makes it very easy to confuse the number "1" with the lowercase of letter "L". This is particularly frustrating, because a lot of the examples reference datasets online that one needs to access by inputting long alphanumeric strings. This could all have been avoided (saving the reader much aggravation) but creating book-specific datasets to be pulled from a dedicated website.Moreover, in some of the sections, R functions are introduced extremely casually without much of an explanation as to why one is using them. This might all be OK if one is using this book as a supplement for a formal classroom course, but if one is studying R and statistics independently, there are many better resources (often for free) on-line.
